Story

I wouldn't dare dream of designing a collection without a classic button-up. It's one of those styles that works in so many different outfits and situations, which is why I think I always come back to it, both in my personal wardrobe and when I'm designing. With the Poppy Top, I tinkered around with several of my old pattern blocks, obsessing over tiny details and intricate measurements to create the ultimate (or close to the ultimate, at the very least) button-up shirt.

The main improvement on this top from previous Margu button-ups is the fit — rather than a straight side seam, the Poppy uses a slightly curved one meant to contour with the natural curves of a person's body. The collar is wider, the button placket narrower, and the armhole more smooth. The shirttail hem is slightly exaggerated (giving a little extra length to tie it up in the front!) but not too much so. If I had to pick one thing to wear all year long from the collection, I think it'd have to be this.

Materials

This top is made of GOTS-certified organic cotton double gauze from India. Composed of two layers of gauze that have been tacked together, double gauze is unbelievably soft, breathable, and opaque. It is light and airy and one of those fabrics that, like linen, is wrinkle-prone, but that's part of what makes it so great to those (like me) who love it — even the first time you wear it, double gauze feels soft and rumpled and worn in, like a cozy old blanket, and it only gets softer with repeated wear.

This particular double gauze is a bit thicker and more tightly woven than the double gauze used as our lining fabric. The color is a sunny yellow-gold that pairs excellently with navy and cream.

In addition to the fabric, this top uses organic cotton thread, six vintage mother-of-pearl buttons, organic cotton interfacing, and organic cotton labels.

The Poppy is most fitted in the bust, so use your bust measurement when determining your size. This style runs true to size, but if your bust measurement falls in between sizes, I recommend sizing up to avoid any gaping in the front.
