Story

This silhouette is one of Margu's signature styles, with a version of this classic shirtdress appearing in each of our collections so far. I like to think that each version has improved upon the last, and the Picnic Dress is no exception: with an improved fit, a stiffer collar, and some minor improvements to its construction, I'm starting to think there aren't many more improvements to be made.

For the Picnic Dress, I designed the short sleeves to be a bit longer than average, the waistband to be a bit more cinched, and the skirt to be bit fuller to give the dress a slight 1940s/1950s shirtwaist vibe. While its modest length and classic collar make it well-suited for semi-professional environments, the Picnic Dress is truly in its element when worn outdoors, with sandals and a sunhat, sitting on the grass and enjoying the sunshine.

Materials

This dress is made of GOTS-certified organic cotton double gauze from India. Composed of two layers of gauze that have been tacked together, double gauze is unbelievably soft, breathable, and opaque. It is light and airy and one of those fabrics that, like linen, is wrinkle-prone, but that's part of what makes it so great to those (like me) who love it — even the first time you wear it, double gauze feels soft and rumpled and worn in, like a cozy old blanket, and it only gets softer with repeated wear.

This particular double gauze is a bit thicker and more tightly woven than the double gauze used as our lining fabric. The color is a sunny yellow-gold that pairs excellently with navy and cream.

The dress is lined with undyed GOTS-certified organic cotton double gauze, produced in a Fair Trade certified mill in India. Our lining fabric is unbelievably soft and breathable and makes for a perfect lightweight layer against your skin.

In addition to the fabric, this dress uses organic cotton thread, 12 vintage mother-of-pearl buttons, organic cotton interfacing, and organic cotton labels.

The Picnic is fitted in the bust and waist, so use both your bust and waist measurements when determining your size. The style runs true to size, but if your measurements fall in between sizes, I recommend sizing up to avoid any gaping in the front.
