Originally debuting in our first collection back in 2016 and reappearing countless times since, this shirtdress is undoubtedly one of Margu's signature styles. I wasn't originally going to include it in our permanent collection due to how long it takes to sew (all those buttons don't sew themselves on by themselves!), but I realized I loved this style so much that I had to make an exception.
With a fitted bodice, gathered skirt, and full button front, the Alice has the feminine silhouette of a fit-and-flare with the smart sensibility of a shirtdress. It's vintage-inspired but not quite retro, playful but not quite childlike, whimsical but not quite eccentric. The airy double gauze fabric makes this dress perfect for spring and summer, but the Alice layers exceptionally well over tights and under sweaters, too.

This dress is made of cotton double gauze from Japan. Composed of two layers of gauze that have been tacked together, double gauze is unbelievably soft and breathable. It is light and airy and one of those fabrics that, like linen, is wrinkle-prone, but that's part of what makes it so great — even the first time you wear it, double gauze feels soft and rumpled and worn in, and it only gets softer with repeated washes and wears.
Take a look at our Size Guide to find your size.
The Alice is fitted in the bust and waist, so I suggest using both of those measurements when determining your size. The dress is designed with a bit of ease (about 2" in the bust and waist) so that you're comfy all day; size down if you're looking for a very fitted look.
Aja (wearing black) is 5'5 and is wearing a size XS. Macey (wearing blue) is 5'4" and wearing size S.
