How It's Made

Thoughtfully Designed, Meticulously Drafted, Slowly Constructed

Making quality clothing takes time. Each garment we make in our studio takes anywhere from 4 to 10 hours to complete from start to finish — and that's not including all the designing, drafting, prototyping, and grading that goes on beforehand. We don't take shortcuts, and we obsess over every little thing, but that's what we like to think makes our clothes so special.

Our patternmaking process is done entirely by hand, with pencil and paper and scissors and tape. It's essentially like drafting a blueprint for a garment — each section that will eventually be a piece of fabric cut and sewn together starts out as a flat piece of paper, meticulously drafted so that each measurement and curvature is just right.

In the production process, we do a number of small things to make our pieces special. We sew and press every seam with care, and while the Margu studio is currently four machines strong, a number of our sewing steps (sewing buttons, tying off threads) are done by hand. Tailored, vintage-inspired details like sew-in interfacing, French seams, bias-bound edges, and blind hems make our pieces as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.
